ACXIS

ACXIS is an European research project within the seventh framework programme answering the call SEC-2012.3.4-1: « Research on Automated Comparison of X-ray Images for cargo Scanning » with reference material (use of historic images in an automated environment) to identify irregularities. The project ACXIS develops a manufacturer independent reference database for X-ray images of illegal and legitimate cargo, procedures and algorithms to uniform X-ray images of different cargo scanners and measurement parameters, and an automated identification of potentially illegal cargo. Historic images of real detections and images of illegal cargo mock-ups as well as images of legitimate cargo will be integrated into the reference database.

Innovative

New image and signal processing algorithms available to amend artifacts from X-ray scatter and imperfect scanner systems as well as to improve the rendering of the cargo images simplifying the detection of illegal objects.

Universal

Manufacturer independent reference database available with X-ray images of illegal and legitimate cargo.

Automated

Highly reliable software developed for automated identification of known illegal objects ("Historic Images") as add-ons for existing cargo scanning systems.

ACXIS in a nutshell

The project ACXIS brings together the expertise in X-ray cargo inspection of leading research centres in Germany, France and Switzerland, the major European supplier for cargo inspection systems, a research and development organisation focusing on training of X-ray inspection officers, and Customs administrations of the Netherlands and Switzerland.

The main objectives of this project are to implement a manufacturer independent reference database for X-ray images of illegal and legal cargo, to develop procedures and algorithms in order to uniform X-ray images of different cargo scanners, to develop a training simulator for inspection officers and a toolbox enclosing several assisted / automated identification techniques for potentially illegal cargo.

Historic images of real detections, images of illegal cargo mock-ups as well as images of legitimate cargo will be integrated into the reference database.
