Work Package 2: Illegal cargo mock-ups and exploration of detection limits
Leader: Thomas Lüthi (EMPA)
In this WP, the first step is to define one or several catalogues with the definition of illegal cargo in detail. This is an essential deliverable for the project as all the subsequent work will be related onto it. The single elements are weighted according to a portfolio matrix. A risk analysis has been conducted in close collaboration between end-users (customs organizations), scientists and security experts in order to define threats to be detected in different cargo screening scenarios.
Various threats among:
-Radioactive and shielding material
-Weapons and ammunition
-Chemical weapons and their precursors
-Fireworks, explosives and IED precursors
-Drugs and their precursors
have been inspected with different X-ray scanners. These images become part of the reference X-ray image data base developed in WP3.
Examples of Scans
In addition, emerging techniques will be assessed and possible improvements to state-of-the-art cargo scanning techniques will be evaluated. Newer developments from technical X-ray inspection technologies as computed tomography will also be considered. For example, tomographies is one of the techniques considered
