Work Package 4: Image pre-processing and unification

In order to compare X-ray images, taken at different inspection sites with probably different inspection systems, methods will be developed to transform the individual X-ray images to standard imaging conditions. Thereby the actual parameters like photon energy, spatial resolution and efficiency of the detector system and the size of the X-ray focal spot are taken into account. As a result the adapted images provide a comparable contrast scale and equivalent sampling.
In addition, different acquisition methods are considered, like drive-by or step-by-step image acquisition, full container or region of interest measurement. Also a variation of the geometrical set-up of the inspection system is considered, since dimensions of the inspection portal and the position of the X-ray source can differ with different sites. Since the cargo in the majority of all cases is concealed in steel boxes or containers, which are not in the focus of inspection but just reduce contrast or visibility of the interior in general, methods to subtract the background due to any kind of containment will be developed.
The respective results of the image processing methods are comparable images of the cargo, independent of the various particular properties of the individual procedures, systems and containments.
